Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The management of the regional newspaper 'La Nouvelle République' has announced a reorganisation plan with 110 job cuts to cope with the drop in sales and advertising volume. The plan provides for a reduction of a quarter of the newspaper's staff across all roles.
Journalists immediately stopped work to organise a one-day strike. La Nouvelle République has 440 employees in the 5 departments covered by the regional daily. At the call of the SNJ (Syndicat national des Journalistes) and SNJ-CGT (Syndicat national des Journalistes) unions, journalists and editorial staff of the La Nouvelle République group have been called to strike on Wednesday 18 March.
The unions denounce the management's plan, known as 'Cap 2023', which is designed to cope with a drop in sales and advertising. According to the secretary of the works council (CSE), the plan would lead to the elimination of 23 journalists' posts within the newspaper. At the Indre office, a journalist post could disappear while at the Châteauroux newsroom one job has already been cut. The job reductions will not take the form of redundancies, but they will be implemented through non-replacement of positions when an employee retires.
A restructuring of 181 job cuts was recorded in 2009.
